How can I choose a qualified home contractor?

If you're having work done on your home in North Carolina, finding a reliable contractor is a huge concern. If you the company you choose performs subpar work you could be looking at lost money as well as potential legal issues down the line if you're truly unhappy with the results. To prevent problems from occurring in the first place, U.S. News & World Report offers the following tips.

Interview Different Selections

Never pick your first choice, even if they receive glowing reviews from friends and family. Instead, select three contractors and hold interviews at all three offices. Ask for bids using the exact same information so you can get a feel for pricing and timelines. Also, be sure to ask for written bids so you can compare offers. This will help establish a baseline for what to expect from your contractor.

Know What Workers Will Be Doing

Companies often use subcontractors to perform a large portion of the work. In this case, ask for the subcontractor's credentials, as well as whether a supervisor will be onsite to manage the project. If you're unhappy with the answers, consider taking your business elsewhere. This will prevent unqualified workers from taking on major responsibilities at your home.

Check Licenses, Insurance, & References

If you're happy with a contractor so far, the final step is check licensing, insurance, and references. A business license indicates that a contractor is fully compliant with the law, while insurance guarantees that you'll be reimbursed for any damage caused. In terms of references, check out online services or request them from the contractor directly. If they're hesitant to provide references from past customers, take caution.
